SPAN 308 was a particularly interesting class to me because part of my family history lies in the depths of Mexican history during the time that Aztlan was a thriving time. This course provided a great deal of information and cultural perspectives through textbooks and online discussions, having people compare their own identity and background with that of the Mexican people during times like the Mexican revolution and the Chicano movement (MLO 3.2). I was able to assess my own background and behaviors in order to understand my own place in society, which in turn helped me to understand the identity of Mexicans during very difficult times for them (MLO 3.1).

VPA 209: Day of the Dead Workshop
I also completed a class detailing the history and tradition behind the Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead. However, it does not count towards the completion of my MLO's, I consider it another vital part of my learning of a secondary culture.
To the right is an example of a project that we completed and displayed during the class. A clay figurine known as a Calavera sculpted, painted, and then dressed to our personal preference. |
