Course Description
VPA 313 engages students in inquiry based learning as they investigate, analyze and describe, both in written and oral presentation format, the overlays of multiple cultures evidenced in early Central Coast art, 1875-1950. Based on the concept of cultural citizenship, the course examines both groups and individuals. While the content focus will be on the visual arts, the course will also examine literature and poetry as they serve to expand and enrich an understanding of regional expression.
Personal Narrative
In this course, I was challenged to learn more about the art that directly related to the California Coastal area, especially in Monterey. Having had no previous knowledge of those topics, I found it quite interesting and also challenging. Due to my background in art, I was very interested in taking this course. I was able to learn about artists, styles, and history pertaining to art alongside proper writing techniques and grammar skills; I found that writing about things that I cared about and related to me directly as an artist made the class that much better. Some specific topics that I learned and wrote about were the female art movement in the 70's, Eastern art compared to Western art and their various influences in California, landscape paintings, photography, installation art, and much more.
