Course Description:
Covers the story of indigenous peoples of the southwestern United States: Aztlán, the Spanish colonial period, the Mexican period, and the acquisition and settlement by the United States. Seeks the exposition of indigenous and Hispanic historical and cultural foundations of the region and the confluence with other Asian and European influences.
Personal Narrative:
I found this class particularly fascinating because part of my family generations ago was part of an indigenous people living in Mexico called the Aztecs. Students were provided 2 textbooks, and later researched a 3rd, and learned about Mexican history and the relationship that Mexico had with the United States during it's creation and evolution. Religion, laws, advances, disadvantages, all aspects of the culture were discussed in both textbooks and also between the students via online discussions. It was interesting, and likewise stimulating, to compare the information between books and see how perspective really plays a crucial role in history; this is something that all students including myself reflected on as well.
